SOCCER
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Cambodia. The rice fields after harvesting is used to play by the villagers. People choose to play it for their exercise. Kids, teenagers, and almost everyone plays it whenever they finish from school or their occupation. Sometimes they just play it for friendship or to bet money. Soccer has long been popular in Cambodia but during the Khemer Rouge years the finest players either died or moved out of the country.
TUOL SLENG GENOCIDE MUSEUM
The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum has lived several lives. In the 1960s it was a high school known as Tuol Svey Prey. From 1975 to 1979 it was S-21 a secret Khmer Rouge prison facility where supposed traitors to the regime were held and tortured. The schools classrooms served as torture chambers and the school windows were covered with barbed wire and iron bars to prevent captives from escaping. Experts estimate that between 15,000 to 30,000 people were held at Tuol Sleng until its wonders fled in 1979. Most of the prisoners were killed at the nearby mass graves of Choeung Ek. Only a handful of them survived.
Today Tuol Sleng which means “hill of poisonous trees” in the Khmer language is one of Cambodia’s most popular tourist attractions drawing around 500 tourists every day.
Tonle Sap Lake
During the monsoon, which is a type of rain during the wet seasons, it’s becomes the largest freshwater lake in Asia. It’s a combination of a lake and river system. The rivers connecting to it changes its flow twice a year. The lake grows and shrinks during the wet and dry seasons. During the wet seasons it grows up to 12,000 square kilometers. During the dry seasons it shrinks down to 2,500 square kilometers. The lake is one of the most highly productive inland fisheries in the world. It supports over 3 million people. One of the most endangered species lives in the lake, the Mekong giant catfish. The catfish can grow up to 10 feet and it can weigh up to 650 pounds. The boat tour there lasts over 5 hours long.
Angkor Wat
In the first half of the 12th century, Angkor Wat was built. the building time of it was estimated to 30 years. It became a Buddhist monument in the 16th century. It is 699 feet high. It is a miniature replica of the universe. The center tower symbolizes the mythical mountain, Meru. The five five towers correspond with Meru’s peaks. The outer walls symbolize the edges of the Earth, and the moat represents the oceans.
